Popular Culture Class Blog

GROUP # 1

Group # 1 is made up of Rotimi, Lakendra, Bionka, Rigo, and Keevy. You will present your group case study on APRIL 24th.

Guidelines for Group Presentations:

For the final group presentations, your group will locate a pop cultural artifact or phenomenon that has NOT been discussed within this semester’s class. You will all effectively be “teachers” for the day, presenting this artifact or phenomenon to the class and explaining why it is relevant to popular culture. You will be given an opportunity in class one day to work on your presentations, but you must also work with one another via this blog. Please post your ideas, thoughts, comments, updates to this blog.

Your presentation, which should last approximately 20 minutes, should include the following:

  • Present examples of your artifact or phenomenon visually (either by bringing in examples that you can pass around or show digitally, via the computer and other equipment.
  • Discuss WHY this particular artifact or phenomenon is an example of popular culture.
  • Discuss HOW this artifact or phenomenon potentially reflects or informs popular cultural attitudes, anxieties, fears, beliefs, ideas, feelings, etc. So you have to go beyond just saying that it’s a popular cultural artifact, you must explain HOW it is.
  • You can either choose one or two representatives of the group to present, or you can all take a small portion of the discussion to present individually.
  • Turn in a page or two that reflects the work that each member of the group did for the completion of this group project, explaining what each person’s contribution was to the overall group project. This paper must be signed by each of you.

You will each receive a grade that reflects the overall effectiveness of the group project. So be sure that you all work together on this, because you will all be getting the same grade.

I think we should discuss why gun violence is affect the pop culture. I will be at work tommorrow from 8-1pm.

While a worthy subject for discussion, I think you might have an easier time if you found a cultural artifact or phenomenon that was an example of popular culture to discuss, rather than try to relate gun violence to popular culture. But if you are all interested in gun violence, I’d take the opposite approach (gun violence as potential result of a popular culture artifact or phenomenon) rather than guns as the popular culture artifact itself. It’s a difference in cause-effect. What, within popular culture, might help INFORM (or cause or further support) a gun-violent culture? We’ve already discussed Hip Hop, so we can’t go there again. We’ve already covered video games (and relationship to violence). So if you go with this topic, you’d have to find some other cultural phenomenon that may potentially inform (or even reflect) gun violence. See what I mean?

Well, i have no problem with the subject matter cyberbullying; but i think we should also consider Blogosphere, with its “cyberdelic experiences” or another topic.

  • Kristin Scott // April 14, 2008 at 5:33 pm | Reply

that sounds interesting, Rotimi — can you explain that more? or send a website to go to? I’m not sure what you mean by “cyberdelic” . . .

  • Rotimi Akindele // April 14, 2008 at 9:25 pm | Reply

Mrs Kristin, i read a magazine “The Noosphere V.S The Blogosphere” by Matthew Ogden (Is The Devil in your Laptop) which explains the “Inevitability of globalization” through the use of the internet; and the other topics in it was “Zombies from Cyberspace” which is certainly all connected to the so-called “cyberdelic experiences.” A “cyberdelic experiences” according to The spirit of the internet (http://www.matrixmasters.com/spirit/html/2a/2b/2c/2c.html )said, “A mind that is in cyberspace is a mind that is altered from its normal, walking around state.”

Rotimi — first of all, it’s just Kristin . . . no Mrs. ;) And thanks for the elaboration — sounds highly cool!

As a side note, Rotimi — if you are personally interested in how the internet is fostering globalization, you’d love the book The World is Flat. Another student of mine recommended it to me, and it’s really interesting! (just fyi)

Cyber bullying is affecting the youth culture today. Cyber bullying is happens from e-mail, instant messaging, chatroom/bash boards, small text messages, web sites, voting booths, and others. Teens will get their revenge on others because they think they can get away with that. Like Bill Belsey said,”deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group intended to harm others.” I think cyber bullying is most popular because teens can tortment in til you break down. When you break down no one will never know what happened to you. The Internet isn’t safe for children because predators are online also, everyday to find their next victim. Teenager don’t care about what they are doing. They care about thier self. Teenager says thing about others most likely to end up taking their lives. MySpace,You tube, and Google thinks it okay to offend that person. People who post videos of abuse online want exposure. These phenonomon need to change thier policy before more people committ sucide.

Hey group one, i just got some more information.
Cyberbullying is a representative of that which is voyeuristic, is of that which is ultra-agitation and is of that which is an abuse or violator of the internet.
What is voyeurism? It’s to obsessive that which isn’t yours and to also violate another’s privacy. Cyberbullying is voyeuristic, because not only does it gossip but it threatens and destroys another’s dignity and privacy. Additionally, the technological revolution has been the biggest contributor to this problem, because it embodies it and transports this sort of modern bullying through the internet.
Furthermore, Cyberbullying sort of brings an end to the traditional way of bullying people through bodily presence, and now invokes and brings into play a new way of bullying and harassment by means of posting false and derogatory words of another person through the use of the internet. Therefore, it becomes a dreadful difficult in stopping the bully on air and the wide spread of derogatory and bad comments made by the bully.
In conclusion, Cyberbullying represents a youth generation or youth culture of the 21st century, which is definitely ultra-agitated and looks for all means necessary to pour out its anger on individuals or on the society. This ultimately shows that voyeurism, ultra-agitation and the abuse of the internet are indivisible in our youth culture; the youths in the 21st century are directly opposite to what their parent’s generation was. Therefore, the majority of youths in our era are nothing but bunch of voyeurist, agitators, abusers and violators.

    Hello, Rigo,Lakendra,and Rotimi

I found some information for our introduction during our presentation.

Cyber bullying is when a child, preteen,or a teen tormented, threatened, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise using the Internet, Interactive,Digital technologies or moblie phones. The four types of cyber bullying is vengeful angel, power hungry, revenge of the nerds, mean girls, and inadvertent. Most likely to be bullying is Myspace,Facebook,HI5,and Youtube. Bullying can happens on school grounds and speculate back home online to humiliated that person. One out of Three teens are victims of Cyber bullying. Some parents don’t know their child are been threatened by another child, in til that child committ suicide. If you are victim of cyber bullying, get help before you committ a crime. Today, Cyber bullying is affect our youth because today youth don’t care, if they offend another child, preteen, and teen. Cyber bullying is more traumatic than physical bullying. Our young people are taking their lives because threatened messages. Why should we care about what that person don’t like me? Cyber bullying is rising to death poles. The stories of Ryan Halligan and Megan Meier has touch my heart of being humiliated, tormented, and threatened by another person. Can this happens to you? It can happens to you and everybody who are using the Internet. Do you think Myspace,Facebook,HI5, and Youtube should change their policy of being cyber bullying. Young People has voice to stand up and fight back against Cyber bullying. They has the power do something about it, before another child like Ryan, Megan, April, Brandon, Cassie, Jared, Corrine, and Kristina take their lives because of Cyber bullying. Young People are the future and I hate to see this happens to our young people. If you are being threatened, Please get help before you committ suicide. Tell somebody about it.
