Group # 5 is made up of Sara D., Erica, Brittney N., Noga, and Shaunta. You will present your group case study on MAY 1st.
Guidelines for Group Presentations:
For the final group presentations, your group will locate a pop cultural artifact or phenomenon that has NOT been discussed within this semester’s class. You will all effectively be “teachers” for the day, presenting this artifact or phenomenon to the class and explaining why it is relevant to popular culture. You will be given an opportunity in class one day to work on your presentations, but you must also work with one another via this blog. Please post your ideas, thoughts, comments, updates to this blog.
Your presentation, which should last approximately 20 minutes, should include the following:
- Present examples of your artifact or phenomenon visually (either by bringing in examples that you can pass around or show digitally, via the computer and other equipment.
- Discuss WHY this particular artifact or phenomenon is an example of popular culture.
- Discuss HOW this artifact or phenomenon potentially reflects or informs popular cultural attitudes, anxieties, fears, beliefs, ideas, feelings, etc. So you have to go beyond just saying that it’s a popular cultural artifact, you must explain HOW it is.
- You can either choose one or two representatives of the group to present, or you can all take a small portion of the discussion to present individually.
- Turn in a page or two that reflects the work that each member of the group did for the completion of this group project, explaining what each person’s contribution was to the overall group project. This paper must be signed by each of you.
You will each receive a grade that reflects the overall effectiveness of the group project. So be sure that you all work together on this, because you will all be getting the same grade.

Hi girls! How’s it going?
I was thinking we should do our presentation about youtube. What do you think? Any other ideas? I’m waiting to hear your thoughts…
Brittney N // April 11, 2008 at 11:02 am |
Hi, You tube is a good idea to me because, its so much to talk about and, in addition it has alot to do with our cultural attitudes, the way we act towards on another and it reflects on ideas beliefs the way people feel etc. I say yes to You Tube…….What about the rest of the group??
Sara D // April 13, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
Hi! I am sorry to be posting so late. I think you tube is a great idea. Other ideas that I had were:
Online dating
Google
Smart phones (blackberry, sidekick, etc)
Text messaging
Political comedy (Colbert Report, Jon Stewart)
My favorite would be online dating….it would be a fun topic to research.
Noga S // April 14, 2008 at 6:58 am |
I think we discussed online dating a bit in class already, but maybe it would still be okay with Kristin.
I’m cool with whatever we pick, as long as you’re sure it’s duable.
I will be gone from Thursday to Monday (out of town) but I will try to be avaliable online. If eventually you girls feel that I didn’t pull my weight because of my absense, then I would be more than happy to do stuff like print our paper and do the presentation itself.
But first we have to agree on a topic…

hi girls when is we going to start meeting for own group i can do it this week because i am busy .also i i think you tube good too. We might can talk about relationship like boyfriend and girlfriend that if we can find something on relationship of pop culture, but other than that we can talk about you tube
Erica Guiden // April 14, 2008 at 9:22 am |
Good Morning everyone, Sorry I had a long weekend. I also agree that you tube is an excellent idea. Maybe when can go into specific details later on in class on make a free date for everyone to meet up.
Noga S // April 14, 2008 at 10:27 am |
Like I already said, I won’t be here from Thursday to Monday so I won’t be able to meet then. Even after that I’m not very avaliable since I have a full time job. I will only be free on the weekend of 26-27 and that’s a little too close to the presentation date. But like I said, feel free to meet and update me online and I’ll do whatever I can to help.
Did we agree that we’re doing Youtube, then?
Noga S // April 14, 2008 at 12:25 pm |
Hi girls!
I will be avaliable tomorrow before and after class – do you wanna meet and get started?
Sara D // April 14, 2008 at 1:35 pm |
I guess You Tube is it….however, I saw another group was also looking at youtube so please have another topic in mind in case Ms. Scott will not let us use this one. Otherwise, youtube is our topic!
I will be available for about 30 min. after class tomorrow and would be willing to do some brainstorming. I have another class following.
Sara D // April 14, 2008 at 1:36 pm |
Noga, I will probably be in class early also, if you would like to discuss our topic.
Sara D // April 14, 2008 at 1:40 pm |
Oops! I apologize! No one else is considering you tube!
Kristin Scott // April 14, 2008 at 1:48 pm |
Youtube sounds good (sounds like you all have settled on that). What you’ll want to do next is pick some “angle” to discuss. We’ll talk about this more in class.
shaunta king // April 15, 2008 at 1:40 pm |
i don’t have classes on monday and wednesday we might can meet on one of them these because that the only time i am free. i looking forward working with you girls and having fun with it instead being boring. can you girls do me a favor help me to learn how to talk more . when i am in group with other people. i glad Ms. scott put me in the group with the right people. so let get start on you tube.
Noga S // April 15, 2008 at 3:11 pm |
I must apologize for doing this so quickly after class, but I’m on a tight schedule…
I think our topic, Youtube, reflects popular culture by giving the Average Joe the opportunity to have his 15 minutes of fame. Many people might deny it but everybody would like the chance to become famous, even for a little while. Youtube has made it possible for many people. Anyone with a camera and a computer can become an overnight celebrity with the help of Youtube. I think it says a lot about us, as a society…
Noga S // April 15, 2008 at 3:14 pm |
Hi Brittney!
Too bad you couldn’t be in class today…
We all agreed on discussing Youtube, and specifically how people are using Youtube to get their 15 minutes of fame.
I won’t be in class on Thursday, but everybody else is gonna meet and keep working on our presentation. Please, by Thursday, try to do some research on our topic and bring whatever you find to class.
Noga S // April 15, 2008 at 3:28 pm |
Hi girls!
Here are a few articles that I’ve found:
*http://tim.vaxius.net/?p=6
*http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/13/nyregion/13video.html?scp=4&sq=youtube%2C+15+minutes+of+fame&st=nyt
If it’s okay with Sara, I would like to present the negative side of “home videos” on Youtube.
Once again, I’m really sorry I won’t be able to meet you on Thursday!
Feel free to update me through the blog and if possible I’ll respond.
Good luck!
Sara D // April 16, 2008 at 10:13 pm |
You tube reflects that our culture is addicted to being “popular”. whether we admit it or not, we all want to have our 15 minutes of fame, as it is so often referred to. It is so easily accessible to the masses and is not limited to any particular age group or race. Is it bringing us closer together because we can see what people are doing on the other side of the world? Or is it keeping us from entertaining ourselves because someone is there to do it for us? You tube, to me, confirms that we are an entertainment culture.
Sara D // April 16, 2008 at 10:18 pm |
Noga,
That would be fine with me if you want to take on the negative side.
See the rest of you in class tomorrow. I have found a couple of videos to share and a couple articles that will be helpful.
Kristin Scott // April 16, 2008 at 10:35 pm |
You are all doing an excellent job of working together, it seems. Hopefully, you’ll have more input from Shaunta and Brittney when you meet. They might not have as easy access to a computer (I think Shaunta doesn’t — not sure about Brittney). In any case, I look forward to your presentation!
Erica Guiden // April 17, 2008 at 9:08 am |
Youtube is an excellent way for artists to get be known or for people just to have their fifteen minutes of fame. I think youtube reflects to popular culture because viewers are curious to see what everyone is doing and seem people like to entertain audiences for free. Youtube also newer to the culture and is easy to be access with just a type and click of a button. I think youtube is a great source because you can do so much without never leaving you computer from entertainment through educational.
shaunta king // April 17, 2008 at 11:26 am |
You tube is a most popculture on line research for everything it help you to find anything on there you might can’t find on regluar internet. If you type in anything like how you would on the inernet it will pop up on you tube also . Thing like movies ,video, games, t.v shows like family guy, the simpson, and relity shows that don’t show every scence , because it to much for t.v.. Last i never use you tube but iam looking forward to experience with this group prestination. The only thing i can say that you tube is just like everything else on the world wide net.
shaunta king // April 17, 2008 at 11:27 am |

Brittney N // April 17, 2008 at 12:58 pm |
Hi ladys sorry for the inconvience, I had a little trouble with the access to a computer and it was mandatory that i be at work the days I missed…
YouTube is a great topic to me because, it’s one of our New culture phonomenons. Everybody knows about it also, everybody atleast heard about it and seen it with their own eyes. With You-tube being one of our topics I feel as though we can gather up alot of information along with lots of research
Brittney N // April 17, 2008 at 1:17 pm |
Hello ladys once again..If you have some time I did some reseach on You-Tube and basically their saying that its one of our highest internet connections. Feel free to look into these sites

Hi Noga,
Your class mates are all here and we wanted to keep you informed with our progress….
Today we looked at a few videos that we want to share in class (we will tell you about them later…don’t want to spoil it if anyone else is looking).
We talked about the positive aspects of you tube and I think we are good with all the positive stuff. We are all concentrating on negative stuff for next week and are going to try to meet before class (in the classroom) on Tuesday to see what we all came up with.
We also talked about how you tube ties in with our youth and lack of communication as well as their own lack of creativity; it is a culture with too much of an entertainment that they don’t have to be very creative to entertain themselves.
Have a great trip and we will see you on Tuesday. Thanks for the links!

Hi group #5 I didnt really have a chance to get access to an computer only when I get to school. I checked out a couple of negative for Youtube which can be found:
(obama& hiliary clinton election rank effect)
(effect the election)
Noga S // April 22, 2008 at 7:33 pm |
Hi Sara!
Okay, so I watched all the videos you wrote for me:
- I loved “Tube It” and I think it’s an excellent way to finish our presentation.
- As much as I loved “evolution of dance” (and I LOVED it!), I don’t think it fits our presentation, ’cause it’s not really a home video – it seems like this guy was performing in front of an audience and someone taped him…
- “Numa Numa” is a perfect video to show…
- “Charlie…” was cute – I guess we can show it…
- I found “Star Wars Kid” rather boring…
- And “Sweet tired cat” is also cute, but I think we should stick to one “cute” video and show either this or “Charlie…”.
I looked into violence videos – I can’t find the actual video of the girl being beaten, but there are a lot of videos discussing it and showing parts of it, so I don’t know if it’s something we should show in class.
Also, I discovered that when you type in “violence” you get a list of more specific searches like “violence against women”, “school violence”, etc. – I think that’s something we should mention in class.
I think that’s all for now…
See you on Thursday…
Noga S // April 22, 2008 at 8:29 pm |
Hi…
Should we maybe show this as an example of violence?:
shaunta k // April 24, 2008 at 10:38 am |

Brittney N // April 29, 2008 at 12:42 pm |
Hi ladys I was thinking about making some type of hand out chart to pass out to the class so they could follow and it would make our group look very organized… I was thinking about adding all our names to the hand out and a brift examples of how powerful YouTuve is and show an diagram of all the diff. sites composed to YouTube..
so what do you ladys think??
shaunta king // April 29, 2008 at 1:12 pm |
